Last Year, Google purchased On2 Technologies. Google released their VP8 video codec and the new WebM container format as open source, last month.
After complaints about a term in the license of WebM, defining that in case of a patent case against Google all rights granted by the license are expiring, Google created a new license based on the Apache and GPL v3 licenses.
